The Battle of the Bubbles, led by the inimitable, informative and amusing wine guru, writer and TV personality Oz Clarke, took place here at High Clandon Vineyard at the end of May.
This is the fifth such event and what entertainment and erudition followed.
Oz led the audience through the delights of English sparkling from the Vineyards of the Surrey Hills paired with Champagnes. Only you and your taste-buds could decide who won this battle.
Cuvee glasses clinked. Bugles blared. Bottles on ice readied!
Sixty guests celebrated English sparkling wines of the Vineyards of the Surrey Hills during Surrey Hills Wine Week.
Battle commenced with head to head tutored tastings of champagne Grande Marques (Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, Lanson, Ayala in Magnum) and Surrey Hills sparkling wine vintages (Albury, Chilworth Manor Rosé, Greyfriars Rosé, in magnum Denbies Cubitt, and two of High Clandon’s vintages).
Fans of English, Surrey Hills Vineyards wines, will be delighted that the vote overall decisively was for England. The Duke of Wellington rides again and Naploeon must wait another year for his chances!
